The Disciples
All of the disciples were Jewish! This is incredibly important because they shared the cultural, religious, and ethnic background typical of Jewish people at that time. The disciples lived in a society where Jewish laws and customs were central to daily life. They followed the teachings of Judaism and were familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures, which influenced their understanding of Jesus’ message. The disciples where twelve ordinary Jewish men that were not particularly strong in their adherence to Judaism. Jesus found them in their weaknesses, walk through it with them and turned their faults into testimonies that changed the hearts of men. As stated earlier, the purpose of this writing is to see what is different between the disciples of Jesus that performed miracles regularly, and the disciple of Jesus today that do not.
I am definitely not the first person to go down this rabbit hole. There are many authors on the topics I will discuss and they all sound very similar, but not quite what I want to say. Firstly, I needed to verify that the disciples of Jesus today in fact do not perform miracles at the same frequency as the first disciples did. I can not say that I have personally performed a miracle. I have been involved in several over the years and have witnessed God change my actions in real time that cause a supernatural occurrence according to His will to happen, in other words, a miracle. In every occasion my only thought was, “Oh God!”, because the situation was always critical. I have come to the belief that this is because it is the only time I truly surrender myself to Christ. This is not the conclusion of others I have investigated.
When I started this writing I had a completely different view of faith and church than the early disciples did. How could I have the same view, they were Jews, I am not. They walked with the Savior in the flesh, I walk with the Savior in Spirit. The first major point I learned was that they were nothing like what I knew a church should look like. It wasn’t just that they met in each others homes because they were small in numbers. It was far deeper. Their minds simply didn’t work the way mine does. Their priorities were different. They were Messianic Jews.
